ELIZABETH VIA BROWN has been involved in the local media for more than 30 years as a feature writer, homes and gardens editor and social columnist for the Montgomery Advertiser and as a freelance journalist for several regional publications, including Montgomery Living, Southern Lady, Wiregrass Living and First Draft, the magazine of the Alabama Writers’ Forum.
As a columnist, she has been fortunate to attend numerous social and civic functions and to meet a variety of people while being paid to ask a lot of questions. She counts as her fondest inspiration Madera Spencer, the long-time social editor of the Montgomery Advertiser and her first boss. “I was one of her girls for almost 10 years and learned the finer points of interviewing people from her. To me, she will always be the epitome of a Southern lady.”
A member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, she has served on the Vestry and co-chairman of the annual fall parish bazaar. Involved in various community organizations, she is a former member of the boards of the Landmarks Foundation and the Montgomery City-County Public Library and is a May 2007 graduate of Class 23 of Leadership Montgomery. She and her husband, Phillip, have one son, Hunter, who lives in Los Angeles.
