RED CROSS TASTE OF THE GARDENS
After an unprecedented amount of rain that day, the Red Cross opened several shelters to accommodate residents who had been flooded from their homes, making the fundraising event at the Vaughn Road location of Southern Homes and Gardens an even more important tool in informing the public about the work of the agency. At various stations, area restaurants tempted shoppers with banana puddin,’ gumbo, pimiento cheese sandwiches and even wedding cake while they placed bids on gifts, services and a garden full of hand-painted flowers especially created by local artists for auction. CAPRI DONORS’ RECEPTION
Sliding down the fireman’s pole is too tempting for many guests who visit David Braly and Mark Montoya’s home in the former fire station on McDonough Street, so at the Capri Community Film Society’s spring major donors’ reception, the cover came off and a few guys—and gals—twirled around the metal tube to the first floor to the delight of onlookers. Guests were encouraged to tour the historic renovated firehouse and the lovely private garden while sampling a festive buffet prepared by Shari Rossman of Cool Beans Art Café served from artist Braly’s worktable. Outside in the lighted courtyard, champagne was decorked for supporters of the city’s only independent film theater. (1) Jamie Durham, society president, Austin Wade, vice president, and Melissa George, secretary/treasurer. (2) Sam and Blake Partridge, a board member, were the evening’s bartenders. DIAMOND PRINCESS BALL
In dresses and sparkling tiaras, a group of little girls in the Capital City became princesses for one magical night in the reception rooms at the State Archives Building in an annual event sponsored by the Landmarks Foundation. Held not only to familiarize girls with the much-treasured local tradition of introducing daughters into society, it is also to support the historical preservation works of the Foundation. Florence Young thought of the idea and has the help of many of the mothers, who are allowed only the briefest of peeks into the party rooms the night of the dance. The princesses had as much fun dancing with each other as they did with the significant men in their lives. During breaks, they were treated to a junior size buffet, and before the hour became late, all were home to dream of their special night. 30TH BIRTHDAY PARTY
To celebrate his 30th birthday, Shadron Graham of Troy wanted a themed event, so his parents, Polly and Rayvon Graham, contacted Bob Vardaman of Montgomery, who planned a seated dinner serving the flavors of Morocco. Held in the Cultural Arts Studio, the annex of the Troy-Pike Cultural Arts Complex, where the honoree is the executive assistant to the director, Richard Metzger, the party was under a candlelight gauzy fabric tent, where guests were entertained by fire-eating dancers from Atlanta and Maya, a belly dancer of Montgomery. Instead of birthday presents, guests were asked to make donations to the art museum.
