Photography By David Robertson, Jr.

Everything in the home of Dr. Jack and Janice Hawkins, from the building materials to the finishing touches in décor, was chosen after careful thought by Janice. By utilizing things with significance and context for her family, she’s given a brand new house the true feeling of home.

As Janice Hawkins strolled through her house at the Waters, she’d pause here and there and explain the inspiration behind a wallpaper pattern, the adventure of finding that light fixture, the friendship with this artist that resulted in the work adorning that wall. From floor to ceiling and everything in between, the home, completed in March 2009, is an intimate expression of the Hawkins family, painstakingly envisioned and then created by Janice—with a little help from her architect, her builder and an interior designer friend. As Chancellor of Troy University, Jack Hawkins knows a thing or two about preparation and organization, but he bows to his spouse’s efforts in that arena. “There is a saying, ‘If you fail to plan, you plan to fail,’” he said. “My wife had great vision for this house and then followed it to the letter. She’s amazing.”

In addition to our October feature highlighting the home of Jack and Janice Hawkins at The Waters, we’ve posted some extra photos of the house below.

The large screened in porch at the Hawkins house is enjoyed almost year round by the family, thanks to an outdoor fireplace.

The Hawkins took full advantage of their amazing lake view with this cozy sitting area in the den. Deep browns play off a neutral color scheme, while an ottoman (upholstered with a shag rug for a dash of fun) does double duty as a coffee table.

Fresh green as the dominant hue in this bedroom has a soothing effect. Recreate the feel in your house: the paint color is Louisville Green by Benjamin Moore.

Janice made the most of a small space, creating a cute, comfy nursery for her grandson. By staying gender-neutral with the wall color and main furnishings, she can easily transform the room into a girl’s nursery later, if needed.

In this upstairs bathroom that oozes sophisticated style, a unique light fixture adds some dazzle and pizzazz, while Lucite chairs bring an unexpected touch modernism.

The Hawkins’ master bath is one you could practically live in thanks to a separate seating area, a television, plenty of counter space and storage and a closet (not pictured) most women would give their right arm for.

Janice made sure the house plans included a large laundry room, one with ample storage space and a place to house her collection of folk art. The family dog even has a little “room of his own” cleverly hidden in cabinet space beneath the sink.
